Donald and Gun Bauchner founded The Perfumer's Workshop in 1971 with the aim of opening a personalized perfume boutique. When the fragrance Tea Rose was presented in 1977 it became an instant success and today most of their products are distributed throughout the world. The brand's products are still manufactured in the US. The company made a name for themselves when they managed to acquire a concession within Bloomingdale's stores. They sold perfume oils which were a hippie signature then, but reworked the idea behind them to be more in line with Bloomingdale's upmarket concept. The idea of custom-made fragrances was born and Perfumer's Workshop counters opened at Selfridge's (1973) and Harrods (1974) in London. The first counter to open in Paris was the one in Galéries Lafayettes in 1975. For the first time the customer was given the power to make their own decisions about the products they would like to be offered. Ingredients, perfume notes and accords, bottles and packaging were for the customer to choose. By the end of the 1970 the Perfumer's Workshop had developed their product portfolio into a collection of ready-made fragrances that were sold at perfume counters in the whole of the USA. Tea Rose, a favorite since the the end of the 1970s, was or is worn by many famous women. Among them are or were Princess Diana, Grace Kelly, Catherine Deneuve, Nicole Kidman and others. The iconic fragrance was composed around a variety of notes. Among them are bergamot, rose, lily, tuberose, sandalwood and amber. By the end of 2011 more than 50 million bottles this fragrance have been sold. The Samba collection was launched in 1987 and made it into Bloomingdale's outlets the same year. This line became popular and more and more fragrances were launched as part of this collection. Since the opening of the brand's Paris office in the 1990s, Perfumer's Workshop have created fragrances for Sonia Rykiel, L'Or de Torrente, Jean-Luc Amsler and Louis Ferraud. Perfumer's Workshop fragrances can be found in shops and stores in more than 90 countries. The company's first www-only collection, Zipped, was presented in 2011. This collection is available for test and purchase only and underlines the changing consumer habits. While department stores and boutiques were the favorites in the past, many customers now prefer shopping online.
